Linear vs Rotational Hitting

9/2/2014

Maybe Ted Williams knew what he is talking about way back when??

Until we started getting real slow video evidence of what MLB Hitters are actually doing the mechanics of hitting were being taught the opposite...

Evidence shows that many more hitters in MLB use a "rotational" approach to hitting over a "linear"  After seeing enough video of what MLB hitters are doing I am convinced that this is what we need to teach our hitters...Not a huge difference to what I thought before but the main idea of getting into slot/plane early is more benefecial to not only Power but consistency

Many of the buzz words and drills I have been preaching to the Sandlot Hitters is with this concept in mind.

Shaft to Shoulder with knob pointing at pitcher
Getting in Slot Early
Bat in hitting zone as long as possible
Short into slot/plane and long through
Letting hips and larger muscle groups control the hands more
Hitting off a firm front side
Getting on same plane as pitch (you actually go a little uphill a lot of times but not verbally telling young hitters this)

How much throwing is to much?

I hear a lot of debate on this subject that "kids in warm weather States throw to much" and "playing year round is too much".  I agree that year round is a little too much and I would like everyone to play 2 sports competitively.  I think the days of playing 3 sports may be about over as it is to competitive now at the younger ages and you will fall behind if you are not fully in your sport.  But, is throwing to much a problem?.  I grew up in Oregon and only played Baseball in very late Spring/Summer and I managed to need Rotator Cuff Surgery down the road as well as a torn labrum that I still have today.

I have heard a lot of different opinions on this subject and I have yet to hear one that conviced me either way as to the best approach to how much we should throw a baseball...In my opinion very excessive throwing could be harmful and coaches, parents etc...should keep on eye on that but for the most part we are genetically pre-determined to have arm issues in some people and not in others...Or I should say excessive arm because if you play long enough (especially pitch) you are going to have something.  Would like to hear what you think.

Club Baseball vs. Little League

My son Grant played both this year.  He had a great time playing Little League for the first time.  I personally dont love the Little League game as I feel like the players these days have outgrown the field and style of play.  Not to mention I think it is a real safety issue for batters and pitchers to be 46 feet away......Would like to hear some feedback.

Rob Gorrell the General Manager of Sandlot Baseball  grew up in beautiful, but rainy Tigard, Oregon.  Played baseball for Sacramento City College under renowned head coach Jerry Weinstein (Colorado Rockies) before coming to Arizona State to play for the late Jim Brock.  Drafted in the 21st round of the 1991 free agent draft and signed a professional contract with the Milwaukee Brewers.  Had a short professional career due to some injuries and self proclaimed analysis "I wasnt very good."  Baseball has always been his first love and when approached about the opportunity to start the club baseball side of Sandlot with Murph he took advantage of it.  Having been surrounded by a lot of great baseball people in his life, Rob has gained a tremendous amount of knowledge about the game over the years.  Having spent the past 5 years around Murph has helped Rob grow that knowledge and got him to start seeing the game with a unique perspective.
