Sandlot Development Program - FAQ's
What do we bring?
Proper baseball attire/equipment: hat, shoes, glove, and bat. Please label your equipment so you can identify it. Bring a lot of water in the Summer months. Most importantly bring a great attitude for baseball with a ton of energy.
Can parents be involved?
We encourage parents to be at the camp, listen, and ask questions afterwards. However, we do not allow parents, even those who are qualified, to offer instruction to players during the camp (unless they are working in an “instructor” capacity for Sandlot Baseball Camps). Parents are not required to stay at the park, as long as we have a contact phone #.
Who is directing the instruction?
Rob Gorrell will be directing the Sandlot Baseball camps. Rob is the Executive Director of Sandlot Baseball BBA and an associate scout for the Detroit Tigers. Rob has coached in high school at Thunderbird and Desert Ridge and runs the Summer program for Wilson and Demarini 15u - 18u. Rob is a former Junior College Player from the nationally recognized Sacramento City College program under renowned head coach Jerry Weinstein. From Sac City Rob transfered to Arizona State University and played for the late Jim Brock as well as hitting coach Jeff Pentland and pitching coach Dub Kilgo. Rob's professional career was with the Milwaukee Brewers Organization as a minor league player. Combined with his baseball playing experiences and guidance from Pat Murphy the founder of Sandlot, Rob has put forth a philosophy and style of play for the youth player that has proven very successful not only in win/loss performance among our club teams but development of the player. Sandlot is a strong fundamental based organization with attention to detail in a fast paced environment. During camps you will be taught how to play under control but fast and aware at all times. There will be lots of player movement combined with many reps. The teaching is not done by stopping the action very often but rather within the drills by Rob and Sandlot staff and often with examples by current players, high school players, college players etc. There is a method to the madness and at Sandlot we feel like the best teaching takes place by simulating game speed with instruction which also keeps the kids engaged in the camp.
Will there be water breaks?
Yes, we will provide breaks in the session to allow players to stay hydrated…and to “regroup”. Please have your son/daughter bring something to drink during the breaks. If you need more to drink than the session breaks please feel free to just go get a drink at anytime.
What is the cancellation/refund policy?
If circumstances dictate that Sandlot Baseball Camps has to cancel a session, then that session will be rescheduled for another date. In that case the player can attend the rescheduled session, or get a credit for a future Sandlot Baseball Camp program. There are no refunds or credits for sessions that a player misses. Just contact us and we will work with you on your specific circumstances. It is very helpful to have as many show up as possible that rsvp as it helps us prepare the camp plans as well as the staff. We like to avoid having people pre-pay as we know the pay at the site is usually more convienant for people.
